Name: Aileen Wang

Title: User Experience Designer II

Residence: Vancouver, BC

Hometown: Vancouver, BC

Aileen’s Visier journey started four years ago when she saw a posting for a Visual Design Co-op position. During her co-op here, Aileen introduced motion design into our product, which was a great milestone. After her initial co-op contract ended, she got extended for another eight months which led into her full-time position here.

Now, as an User Experience Designer II, Aileen is highly specialized in UI and Motion Design.  She creates an interactive experience for our users, which contributes to Visier’s user-centered and intuitive interface. Other than leading our motion design for our product, Aileen also optimizes the internal design process by focusing on standardization and creating systems and guidelines for our design team.

Let’s dive deeper into Aileen’s work and her life:

Work Questions:

What brings you to work everyday?

Doing something that I enjoy! This job allows me to optimize what I am good at,  explore and grow my skills, and work towards the greater good for our team and for Visier. Since I specialize in standardization and motion design, I have a lot of freedom in terms of developing those areas for our product. Essentially, I’m working towards something that is meaningful both for me personally and helpful for our team!

How does your team influence the product?

On a high level, my team is responsible for designing the workflow and appearance of a feature. We design what each page should look like and how they can interact with each other in the application. And of course, we always keep the end users in mind to produce the best experience possible.

What Visier feature do you think is super cool?

I think our analysis page is pretty cool! This is because there’s a lot more freedom in terms of how you can edit and customize the page to help you make better data-driven decisions.

Do you have any career goals you’re working towards?

I do! Since I am already doing a lot of internal documentation to optimize the design process within our  team, I plan to become a motion design and design systems/enablement specialist. Going niche in the Design field.

What is something you’re professionally proud of?

I am pretty proud of introducing motion design to Visier! I have since created guidelines on how to conceptualize motion design, gave a dev talk (lunch & learn), and presented at company-wide demos to introduce motion design to a wider audience. Overall, it’s become an important part of our product!

Life Questions:

What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?

Since my personality leans toward the passive side, I can often be subtle in my intentions and hope others will understand it. This is not always the case, but I’m encouraged by this advice that my senior designer mentor gave me:

“Be assertive and clear about what you want to do and what you’re thinking”

This inspires me to speak up and not drown myself in my own thoughts because it will not solve anything.

What’s one hobby you’d love to get into?

I would love to get into 2D character animation. I’ve always enjoyed drawing and it would be awesome to incorporate animation to bring my characters to life.

Dream travel destination?

Anywhere in Europe! Since I enjoy learning about art and history, I would love to visit the art museums there!

What’s a fun fact about yourself?

I have a 500+ volume manga collection!
