Introduction

Visier® Organization Design supports continual, data-driven scenario modelling to test, validate, and support the execution of organizational transformations. Built upon Visier’s data platform, Organization Design moves beyond static organizational charts, allowing leaders to visualize their current structure and model future states dynamically.

Org structures are automatically populated with your current, validated data, eliminating the need for manual data entry. Key metrics, including Average Direct Span of Control, Total Cost of Workforce, Reporting Layers, and Headcount, are available out of the box. This ensures stakeholders can identify discrepancies immediately and make decisions based on accurate, real-time information rather than outdated spreadsheets.

What value is delivered?

Organization Design is engineered to help organizations optimize their structure—whether growing, downsizing, or restructuring—to align with strategic goals. By connecting position data directly to workforce metrics and costs, organizations can design with confidence. Organization Design has the following core value propositions:

  • Visier populates the design environment with current organization, position, and hierarchy data. This provides an accurate starting point as a baseline, ensuring that all models are grounded in the reality of the organization's current state.

  • Create multiple what-if scenarios to test different structural changes without affecting production data. You can model complex changes, such as moving departments, changing reporting lines, or reducing layers, and immediately see the impact on cost and headcount before execution.

  • Organization Design identifies where there are discrepancies between your current state and your desired future state. By comparing a scenario directly against the baseline, you can visually track the net changes in headcount, cost, and efficiency.

  • Organization Design provides immediate feedback on organizational health metrics. As you alter position information, spans and layers metrics are instantly updated, allowing you to easily focus on areas of concern such as spans over a certain threshold, heavy management layers, and teams that are spread too thin.

  • Once a scenario is finalized, the data does not get stuck in the tool. You can export the data to support the execution of the change in your HRIS or for further operational analysis.

What do I get with Visier® Organization Design and what do I need to provide?

Visier® People Essentials is required as a prerequisite to utilizing Organization Design, as it provides the foundational data regarding workers and hierarchy.

With Visier’s Organization Design, you can access:

  • Scenario modelling and comparison: This capability allows Organization Design practitioners and HR Business Partners to clone their current organizational structure into a sandbox environment. You can create multiple variations of a future organization to compare different strategies (e.g., "Conservative Growth" vs. "Aggressive Restructuring").

  • Side by side review: View your baseline metrics next to your scenario metrics to instantly calculate the delta in cost and headcount.

  • Position management and editing: This capability allows for granular control over the proposed structure. You can alter position information to reflect the new design.

  • Move and reparent: Drag and drop organizations, positions, or units to new managers or departments.

  • Edit attributes: Change job titles, cost centers, locations, or other position attributes to reflect the new scope of the role.

  • Create and remove: Model the creation of new required roles or the removal of redundant positions to see the impact on the bottom line.

  • Real-time structural metrics: As you alter the organization, Visier calculates the impact in real-time.

  • Holding area: As you make changes in a scenario, positions and employees that are removed from the structure are held within a holding area.

  • Spans and layers: Automatically recalculate the Average Direct Span of Control and Organization Layers as reporting lines are changed.

  • Financial impact: Monitor the Total Cost of Workforce for the scenario to ensure the new design fits within financial plans.

  • Health checks: Highlight on the org structure, where positions meet certain parameters. E.g. showing positions that have a span of control > 14.

  • Data export: Once a design is approved, the updated hierarchy and position data can be exported as .csv or .xls. This facilitates part of the  "write-back" process that will initially need to be supported by a data transformation team.

Technical Limitations

Metric Definitions: Out-of-the-box logic for Average Direct Span of Control, Headcount, Layers follows standard Visier definitions to ensure consistent benchmarking.
